Showdown 2: “It Tolls NOT for Thee or Me”

September 12th, 2005

Note: The version available here is missing a few seconds on the end. I’m working on it.

Showdown 2 features Mitchell and Reid as the conversants, Penny as moderator, and Grace again as timekeeper. The entire first segment was lost in an editing accident, but thanks to Mitchell’s and Reid’s flagrant disregard for the clock, we still had more than enough material to go over our target thirty minutes!

I’ll index it later here:

00:00 — Embarrassed confession

01:13 — Open-Ended:
Pineland, recent books, little-known movie recommendations, first-date ideas, recent restaurant closures, overpriced fantasy football players, steroids, and TV crushes.

24:12 — This or That?
Quarterbacks, desserts, work or play, Frisco or the Big Apple, steak, meat, drama, burgers, vball, 6-strings, chick-lit / lad-lit, 70s Hawaiian music, spuds, bookstores, and playground equipment.

35:47 — One Minute
Photography, Reid’s No Conservative, and New Orleans.

37:55 — Thank you!

Roger Ebert’s Review of Cherish, Mitchell’s obscure movie recommendation.

Showdown 1: The Monster at the End of This Book, or a Hopeful Possibility

August 20th, 2005

Here’s the first Village Idiots podcast! We recorded it the night of Friday, August 19, but because Mitchell’s first week of school immediately followed, it took a while to get everything edited and compressed. We hope you like it.

In this showdown, Penny squares off against Reid, with Mitchell moderating and Grace keeping the time. Larrilyn provided moral support and gave Reid disapproving looks behind his back. This wasn’t a competition, but if you’d like to tell us who you think emerged victorious, we’d love to hear it!

Here’s a rough index of our conversation:

  • 00:00 — Intro
  • 00:34 — Back and Forth:
Mass transit, Supreme court justices, stem-cells, Pacific-rim cuisine, No-Child, and chocolate!
  • 10:48 — Open-Ended:
Eastern Paradise, dollar movies, the library, film directors not named QT, and Jumping at 36.
  • 19:56 — Best, Worst, and Most
Candy, TV moms, Billy Joel, boring movies, movie food, reading in bed, fries, magazines, dessert, bad sushi, Ala Moana Food Court, and bad Olympics.
  • 25:01 — One Minute
Kamehameha Schools, three books, and O.W. Efurd
  • 27:31 — Ta-ta!
